Educating our next generation of leaders

Last session, we took a significant step in ensuring that South Carolina’s schools provide the training and equipment for our students to compete across the nation – and across the globe.

The enactment of the South Carolina Virtual School Program laid the groundwork for a system of online classes for our state’s high school students. Theses virtual schools will hold our students and teachers to the same high standards as traditional classes. By taking advantage of rapidly changing technologies, our students will have a greater variety of courses, moving beyond what is offered at their particular school.

First Congratulations Senator! What a resounding endorsement of your work for South Carolina and Oconee county. Thank you.

Looking forward, I want to comment on education. I grew up in a military family exposed to numerous educational processes, private and state, in the US and abroad . I, along with many others, are of the strong opinion that a sound education system is the base of any great society. However we continue to have an inability to move up to world class standard system. The best national SAT scores were achieved in 1963-64.
The SC and Oconee tax funded education system should be managed as a busines with mandates to produce an ever improving student product.

Soloution considerations: Increased pay for better teachers - only as far as it improves the student, hold school systems and teachers acountable for producing a better student - no improvement-no tenure, school uniforms - this is done all over the world - compare the educational product of uniformed with non uniform schools, seperation of sexes - boys and grils compete better in classes when seperatated.
The facts are that schools that incorporate some or all of the above mentioned have siginificantly higher graduation rates with a lot more students continuing at the university level. Unfortunately these changes can be found all over the world but never seem to resonate here. Senator Alexanader, Oconee county needs your strong leadership to bring our school systems in line with the worlds succesful educational systems. We need serious discussion because we are not producing a world class student and our student retention rates are unexceptable.

I hope my comments are useful.

    Best regards,

    John Tollenaere
